Description

This ceramic mug says it plainly for anyone stepping away from work: Officially Retired, set in tall silver serif lettering, with The best is yet to come written beneath in a flowing silver script. The body is a clean glossy white, so the foiled silver words stand out crisply from across the table. It is a classic straight-sided mug with a generous open handle, 10cm tall, 12.5cm wide and 8cm deep, and it holds 310ml, around 11oz, which is a proper full cup of tea or coffee rather than a dainty sip. It is a simple, cheerful way to mark the day the alarm clock gets switched off for good.

We think of it first as a retirement gift, the sort of thing that gets handed over at a leaving lunch or tucked into a gift bag on the last day, and then earns its place in the kitchen cupboard for years after. It suits the morning cup taken slowly in the garden or with the paper, now that there is no train to catch. The wording is upbeat rather than sentimental, so it works whether the retirement is a quiet family moment or a big send-off with cake and speeches. It is just as welcome on a desk at home for anyone who plans to keep busy.

The mug is ceramic, with the lettering in a foiled silver finish against the white. As good practice for foiled decoration, we suggest washing it gently by hand in warm soapy water with a soft cloth, and avoiding scourers or anything abrasive on the lettering so the silver stays bright. For gifting, it pairs nicely with a packet of good tea, a bag of fresh coffee beans or a few biscuits, and needs little more than tissue paper and a bow to look ready for the big day.
