Description

A bench, 106cm wide, in black. At 106cm wide it is wider than a standard interior door. A bench does two jobs no chair does: it seats more people in the same length, and it slides fully under a table when it is not in use.

Matt black shows dust rather than fingerprints, which is the opposite problem to a polished finish and a much easier one — a dry cloth deals with it. Iron is the traditional choice for a reason: it takes heat, weight and time without complaint. It will mark if it is left wet, so indoors or under cover is where it belongs. Polyester holds colour better than any natural fibre. It does not fade in a sunlit room, does not shrink, and takes a wipe rather than a wash, which is why it is the fibre of choice where a fabric has to last.

The seat sits at 41cm, which suits a 74 to 76cm table. It is rated to 120kg.

What makes a seat comfortable for an hour is different from what makes it comfortable for a minute. Support under the thigh and at the base of the back is what decides the hour; padding is what decides the minute. Anything sat on daily loosens eventually. Checking and nipping up the fixings once a year is the whole of the maintenance, and it is the difference between a frame that lasts and one that develops a wobble it never loses.
