The Nilbine is a black steel wall light. A round wall plate carries a slim, angled arm, and from its tip a short cord drops a faceted wire cage shade, open on every side so the bulb sits on show inside the frame. It measures 15.5cm in length and 37.5cm in height, and it reaches 27.5cm out from the wall. It takes a single E27 bulb up to 60W, which you choose yourself. It is rated IP20, which settles where it belongs: indoors, in a dry room.

Beside the bed is where this wall light comes into its own. Fitted on the wall at either side of a headboard, it frees the bedside table of a lamp and leaves room for books, a phone and a glass of water. The open wire cage suits an industrial or Scandinavian scheme, and the black finish sits well against pale walls, warm wood and plants. It works as well over a reading chair in a living room or beside a desk in a study, wherever you want a pool of light at eye level. Because the frame is open, the bulb you pick becomes part of the look, so a clear filament bulb shows off the geometry best.

The body is steel, a strong metal that keeps the fine lines of the cage crisp, and the black colour carries through the plate, arm, cord and shade alike. There is no switch on the light itself; it is switched at the wall, so you control it from a wall switch. It runs on 220-240V, 50/60Hz mains, and because it is hardwired, a qualified electrician installs it. The installation instructions come as a download. One practical note: the bulb is not included, so pick up an E27 bulb of 60W or less, and a warm filament style will give the cage its best glow.
