Description
This little metal mantel clock takes the shape of an old steam train, with its round clock face set into the front of the engine. The body is a deep, glossy green, picked out with rows of rivets, a black chimney and a silver-toned chevron plate across the front, while silver-toned spoked wheels run along each side, a large one at the back and two smaller ones ahead of it. Behind the boiler sits an open cab with a raised roof, just as on a real locomotive. The white dial has clear black numerals and slim black hands inside a silver-toned bezel, and it carries the word QUARTZ. The clock stands 6.4cm tall, 7.5cm wide and 5.8cm deep.
As a mantel clock it is made to stand, so it needs no wall and no fixings. Set it on a mantelpiece, a bedside table, a bookshelf or a desk and the time is always within easy reach. Its small size suits the places a larger clock cannot go, such as the end of a shelf in a study or the corner of an office desk, and the steam train shape brings a cheerful touch to a row of books or keepsakes. The deep green sits happily with wood, brass and other traditional pieces.
The clock is made of metal and runs on one LR66 battery, which is included, so it is ready to set the moment it comes out of the box. Its glossy finish needs little care: dust it with a soft dry cloth and keep it away from water and damp. Stand it at a slight angle on the shelf so the spoked wheels and the open cab show from the side as well as the dial from the front. Wrapped in tissue, it makes a charming small gift that can be keeping time from the day it is unwrapped.
