Description

This miniature mantel clock takes the shape of a fishing rod, with the clock set into the face of its reel. It is made from metal alloy with a satin silver plated finish throughout, from the ribbed grip at the end of the rod to the line guides along its length. A fine wire line runs from the tip and ends in a small fish charm that hangs free beside the reel. The white dial carries clear black Arabic numerals and slim black hands, framed by a ring of raised studs around the edge of the reel. It is 7.5cm high, 9cm across and 3.5cm deep.

Because it is so compact, it suits spots where a full size clock would crowd the space: a bedside table, a desk, a bookshelf or a living room mantelpiece. It rests on its reel and the end of the rod, so it needs no wall, hook or stand, and you can turn it to face wherever you sit. The analogue face is easy to read at a glance, and the fishing rod design brings a light, playful touch to a plain shelf. We like it among books, framed photographs and other small favourites, or on a desk in a study with an outdoor, riverside feel.

Inside is a quartz movement powered by one LR66 button cell battery, which is included, so the clock is ready to set as soon as it comes out of its packaging. The metal body needs very little looking after: dust it with a soft dry cloth, and avoid polishes or abrasive cleaners that could wear the plated surface. Handle the wire line gently so the fish charm keeps hanging straight. As a gift it is small enough to wrap with ease, and it makes a cheerful little piece that raises a smile every time someone checks the time.
