Merrill 1 Light Outdoor Wall Lantern - Heritage Bronze

The Merrill is a 388mm outdoor wall lantern with a die-cast aluminium frame finished in heritage bronze, housing an amber seeded glass diffuser inside a panelled cage structure. The E27 lampholder accepts a single bulb up to 60W (sold separately), with the seeded glass texture breaking the light into a textured warm glow. The IP44 rating provides protection against solid objects above 1mm and water splashes from any direction.

Designed for exterior installation on porches, beside front doors, garage entrances and covered patios, the Merrill mounts on a rectangular backplate that fixes to a standard exterior wall box. The 241mm projection clears most door frames and window surrounds, while the 194mm width keeps the profile narrow enough for tight alcoves and entrance ways. The bronze finish develops a patina over time when exposed to weather, deepening the tone of the metalwork.

The glass is double-processed with seeding and ream-etching, giving two layers of texture that diffuse the bulb filament or LED element and reduce glare when viewed from below. The frame's Arts and Crafts proportions — pagoda-style cap, vertical cage ribs, curved bracket detail — suit traditional, cottage and period revival architecture. The die-cast construction and powder-coated finish handle coastal salt air, industrial pollution and high-UV exposure better than painted sheet metal alternatives.

What does IP44 mean for outdoor use?

IP44 protects against solid objects above 1mm (dust, insects) and water splashes from any direction. The Merrill is suitable for covered porches, under eaves, and recessed entrance ways where it's sheltered from direct rain but exposed to wind-driven spray. It is not rated for fully exposed positions like open garden posts or unsheltered wall sections.

What bulb should I use?

The E27 socket accepts any standard Edison screw bulb up to 60W. Most users pair this with a warm-white LED filament bulb between 4-8W and 2200K-2700K to complement the amber seeded glass and bronze finish. Clear filament bulbs show through the seeded glass texture; frosted bulbs provide more even diffusion.

Does the bronze finish change over time?

Yes. The powder-coated heritage bronze finish develops a natural patina when exposed to weather, deepening in tone and occasionally showing lighter highlights on raised edges. This is a characteristic of bronze finishes on exterior fittings, not a defect.

Can it be installed on a pebbledash or rendered wall?

Yes. The rectangular backplate fixes to a standard exterior wall box using two screws. On pebbledash, textured render or uneven stone, a backing plate or packer may be needed behind the backplate to achieve a flush seal and maintain the IP44 rating.
