Description

The Mercury weatherproof cable reel delivers 20m of high-visibility orange cable wound onto a portable reel housing, with two IP54-rated sockets housed behind a hinged weatherproof cover. The reel terminates in a UK 13A fused plug and carries a thermal cut-out that interrupts power if the internal temperature exceeds safe limits, protecting against overload when the cable is fully or partially wound.

Designed for outdoor and site use where temporary mains power is needed at distance from a building socket, the reel suits garden power tools, outdoor lighting setup, market stalls, event power distribution and workshop extension. The IP54 rating on the two sockets provides splash and dust resistance, making them safe to use outdoors in typical UK weather conditions provided the socket cover is closed when not actively in use. The wide circular base keeps the reel stable on uneven ground and the integrated carry handle allows single-handed portability despite the 3.45kg weight.

The thermal cut-out is critical to safe operation: when the cable is fully wound, heat generated by current draw cannot dissipate efficiently, limiting safe load to 960W (approximately four amps). When the cable is fully unwound, airflow around the cable allows the full 3120W (13A) capacity to be used. The orange cable jacket provides high visibility in low light and on cluttered site floors, reducing trip hazards. The reel conforms to BS EN 61242, the British and European standard for cable reels for household and similar purposes.

Frequently Asked

What's the difference between the wound and unwound load ratings?

When the cable is fully or partially wound on the reel, heat generated by electrical current cannot dissipate efficiently, so the maximum safe load is 960W (around 4A). When the cable is fully unwound, airflow around the cable allows it to cool naturally, permitting the full 13A (3120W) load. Always unwind the cable completely when powering high-draw appliances like heaters, angle grinders or pressure washers.

Are the sockets genuinely weatherproof?

The two sockets are rated IP54, meaning they are protected against dust ingress and splashing water from any direction. They are safe to use outdoors in rain provided the hinged cover is closed when the sockets are not actively in use. They are not submersible and should not be left in standing water.

What does the thermal cut-out do?

The thermal cut-out is a safety device that automatically disconnects power if the internal temperature of the reel exceeds a safe threshold. This prevents cable insulation damage and fire risk when the reel is overloaded or used with the cable wound. The cut-out resets automatically once the reel cools down.

Is it suitable for powering garden tools?

Yes. The 20m cable length reaches most garden power tool applications from a house socket, and the IP54-rated outlets are safe to use outdoors. Ensure the cable is fully unwound if you are powering a hedge trimmer, lawn mower or pressure washer rated above 960W.
