Description

The Mercury UK mains plug is a standard 13A BS1363-compliant plug with a black thermoplastic casing, shrouded brass pins and an integral 13A fuse. The plug accepts flex cable up to 1.5mm² and secures it via an internal cord grip that clamps onto the outer cable sheath, preventing strain on the terminal screws.

Designed for rewiring appliances or replacing damaged plugs on kettles, microwaves, heaters, washing machines and other high-draw household devices up to 3,000W. The 13A fuse provides overcurrent protection, isolating the appliance from the mains if the current exceeds the fuse rating. The shrouded pins reduce the risk of contact with live metal during insertion or removal from a socket.

The black casing sits flush against dark-coloured cables and gives a discreet finish in entertainment cabinets, workshops and office installations where a white plug would stand out. The plug body separates into two halves via a single central screw for access to the terminals, and the fuse carrier is reachable from the underside without fully disassembling the plug.

Frequently Asked

What devices need a 13A fuse?

Devices drawing more than 1,150W on 230V mains need a 13A fuse. That covers kettles, microwaves, heaters, washing machines, power tools and most other high-draw household appliances. Lower-power devices such as table lamps, radios and phone chargers are normally fitted with a 5A or 3A fuse instead.

Can the fuse be replaced?

Yes. The fuse carrier is accessible from the underside of the plug and accepts standard BS1362 fuses. The 13A fuse can be replaced with another 13A fuse, or with a lower rating if the appliance requires it.

What cable size does it accept?

The plug accepts cable up to 1.5mm² cross-sectional area. The internal cord grip clamps onto both the outer sheath and the individual conductors to prevent strain on the terminal connections.

Does it comply with UK wiring regulations?

Yes. The plug is manufactured to BS1363 standards, which is the required standard for UK mains plugs under the Electrical Equipment (Safety) Regulations 2016.
