Description

The Mercury figure 8 speaker cable uses a 2 x 7 strand construction with mixed copper and copper-clad aluminium (CCA) conductors inside a white PVC sheath. One side of the cable carries a black polarity line running the full length, making it straightforward to maintain correct phase across multiple speaker runs without needing to strip back the sheath to check conductor colour.

Designed for background music systems, multi-room audio installs, and distributed speaker networks where cable runs terminate behind walls or above ceilings, the 0.18mm² cross-sectional area suits speaker runs up to approximately 10-15m at 8Ω impedance without significant signal loss. The figure 8 profile keeps both conductors parallel and reduces the chance of accidentally pulling cores apart during installation compared to twin-and-earth style cables.

The 100m reel format provides enough cable for a typical four- to six-room distributed audio project with some spare for patching and fault correction. The mixed copper/CCA conductor composition balances cost with conductivity — pure copper strands handle the majority of the signal path while CCA strands reduce overall cable weight and material cost. Maximum current rating of 1.0A makes this cable suitable for low- to moderate-power amplifiers driving ceiling speakers, bookshelf speakers and wall-mounted units in commercial and residential settings.

Frequently Asked

What speaker runs is this cable suitable for?

The 0.18mm² CSA suits runs up to 10-15m at 8Ω speaker impedance without significant signal loss. For longer runs or lower impedance speakers (4Ω), consider a heavier-gauge cable to maintain signal integrity.

What does the black polarity line indicate?

The black line runs along one side of the white sheath, marking the negative or return conductor. This allows installers to maintain correct phase across multiple speaker runs without needing to strip the sheath to check internal conductor colours.

Can this cable be buried in walls or run above ceilings?

The cable is designed for concealed installation in residential and commercial settings. However, it is not fire-rated to BS EN standards for plenum or fire-alarm-grade installations. Check local building regulations before burying cable in walls.

What is CCA and how does it affect performance?

Copper-clad aluminium is an aluminium core with a thin copper coating. It reduces cable weight and cost compared to pure copper but has slightly lower conductivity. In this cable, the mix of 4 copper strands and 3 CCA strands per core balances performance and cost for distributed audio applications.
