Description

The Mercury is a figure 8 speaker cable with two parallel conductors, each containing 13 strands in a mixed copper and copper-clad aluminium (CCA) configuration. Each conductor has seven 0.18mm copper strands and six 0.18mm CCA strands, giving a combined cross-sectional area of 0.33mm² per core. The white PVC sheath carries a black line along one conductor to identify polarity when terminating.

Designed for background music systems, small PA installations and domestic hi-fi runs where cable is concealed in walls, under floors or within trunking, the 100m reel suits installation contractors and integrators working on medium-scale projects. The 2.0 x 4.0mm profile fits standard twin cable clips and conduit without excessive bulk. The 2.5A maximum current rating handles amplifier outputs up to approximately 60W RMS at 8 ohms over typical cable runs of 10-20m.

The mixed copper/CCA conductor construction balances cost and conductivity. The seven copper strands per core provide the majority of the conductivity, while the six CCA strands add strand count and flexibility without the full material cost of pure copper. The figure 8 profile keeps both conductors parallel throughout the run, reducing the risk of phase mismatch or signal imbalance when cables are cut to length and stripped on-site.

Frequently Asked

What amplifier power can this cable handle?

The 2.5A maximum current rating supports amplifier outputs up to approximately 60W RMS at 8 ohms over cable runs of 10-20m. Higher wattage or longer runs will require a heavier gauge cable to avoid voltage drop and potential overheating.

How do I identify polarity when terminating?

The white sheath carries a black line running along one of the two conductors. This marked conductor is typically used as the negative or common terminal, while the unmarked conductor connects to the positive or hot terminal. Consistent polarity across all speaker runs prevents phase cancellation.

Can this cable be used outdoors?

No. The white PVC sheath is not UV-stabilised or weatherproof. For outdoor speaker installations use a cable rated for external use or run this cable inside UV-resistant conduit.

What's the difference between copper and CCA strands?

Copper strands have higher conductivity than copper-clad aluminium (CCA), which is an aluminium core with a thin copper plating. The mixed construction in this cable uses seven copper strands per core for the majority of the conductivity, with six CCA strands adding flexibility and strand count at lower material cost. Pure copper cable would offer slightly better conductivity but at higher price.
