Description

The Mercury fig 8 speaker cable is a 100m reel of 2-core speaker cable with 13 strands per conductor, combining copper and copper-clad aluminium (CCA) construction. The cable uses a figure-8 profile with a grey PVC sheath and a black polarity line running down one side, making it straightforward to maintain correct phase connections when wiring multiple speakers.

Designed for residential and light commercial audio installations, the cable suits in-wall runs to ceiling speakers, background music systems in retail or hospitality, and home cinema surround installations where cable is concealed behind plasterboard or run under carpets. The 0.33mm² cross-sectional area supports runs up to approximately 10m per speaker at 8Ω impedance without significant signal loss, and the 2.5A maximum current rating handles standard domestic speaker loads comfortably.

Each conductor contains 7 strands of 0.18mm copper wire and 6 strands of 0.18mm copper-clad aluminium wire, giving flexibility for routing around corners and through joists while maintaining a consistent 2.0 x 4.0mm cable profile. The grey sheath is flame-retardant PVC rated for permanent in-wall installation under UK building regulations. The 100m reel length allows for multiple speaker runs from a single spool without joins.

Frequently Asked

What length speaker run does this cable support?

For 8Ω speakers, runs up to 10m per speaker maintain good signal integrity with minimal loss. Longer runs are possible but may benefit from a thicker cable gauge depending on the amplifier and speaker specifications.

Is this cable suitable for in-wall installation?

Yes. The grey PVC sheath is flame-retardant and rated for permanent installation behind plasterboard, through ceiling voids and under floors in accordance with UK building regulations for low-voltage audio wiring.

What is the polarity line for?

The black line running down one conductor helps maintain correct phase when wiring multiple speakers. Consistently connecting the marked conductor to the positive terminal on both the amplifier and speaker ends ensures all speakers move in phase, which is critical for sound quality in stereo and surround systems.

Why does the cable use copper-clad aluminium as well as copper?

The hybrid construction reduces cost while maintaining adequate conductivity for short to medium speaker runs. The copper strands provide the core conductivity, while the CCA strands add flexibility and bulk to the cable without significantly compromising performance at domestic listening levels.
