Description

The Mercury Fig 8 is a 2-core speaker and power cable with a figure-8 profile, using a mixed copper and copper-clad aluminium (CCA) conductor construction rated at 0.36mm² cross-sectional area per core. The cable uses 7 strands of 0.18mm copper and 7 strands of 0.18mm CCA per core, enclosed in a red and black PVC sheath that runs as two joined parallel conductors with polarity colour coding.

Designed for lightweight audio applications where conductor resistance is less critical than installation flexibility and cost, the cable suits small bookshelf speaker runs under 10m, automotive audio wiring, temporary PA setups, and low-power DC applications up to 2.5A. The 2.3 x 4.6mm flat profile routes easily behind skirting, under carpets, and through tight vehicle panel gaps without the bulk of round twin-core cable.

The mixed copper/CCA construction reduces material cost compared to pure copper while retaining sufficient conductivity for short speaker runs at domestic listening levels. CCA (copper-clad aluminium) uses an aluminium core with a thin copper coating, which increases resistance compared to solid copper but remains acceptable where cable length is short and power draw is low. The red/black sheath colour coding ensures correct polarity when wiring speakers or connecting DC devices.

Supplied on a 100m reel, the cable is sold by the metre at point of sale — the reel format suits installers running multiple shorter lengths across a project without needing to order individual cut lengths. The 2.5A maximum current rating limits the cable to audio and signal applications rather than mains power distribution.

Frequently Asked

What's the difference between copper and CCA conductors?

CCA (copper-clad aluminium) uses an aluminium core with a thin copper coating. It has higher resistance than pure copper, meaning more power loss over longer cable runs. For short speaker runs under 10m at domestic listening levels, the difference in audio performance is negligible. For longer runs or higher-power applications, pure copper cable is preferable.

What speaker impedance does this cable suit?

The 0.36mm² CSA suits 8-ohm speakers on runs up to 10m without significant power loss. For 4-ohm speakers or runs exceeding 10m, a larger CSA cable (1.5mm² or above) reduces resistance and maintains amplifier damping factor.

Can this be used for mains power?

No. The 2.5A maximum current rating and conductor construction are not suitable for mains voltage distribution. Use this cable only for low-voltage DC applications, speaker connections, and signal runs.

How is the cable sold?

The cable is supplied on a 100m reel and sold by the metre. Order the total meterage required and it will be cut from the reel at dispatch.
