Description

The Mercury Fig 8 is a 2-core power and speaker cable constructed with 130 strands per core (65 copper + 65 copper-clad aluminium) giving a combined 3.31mm² cross-sectional area. The figure-8 profile twin cable is sheathed in red and black PVC for polarity identification, with each core rated to 30A maximum current draw.

Designed for automotive wiring, high-power speaker runs and general DC power distribution, the cable handles applications where flexibility and current capacity both matter. The 50m reel length suits car audio installations requiring long runs from battery to amplifier, PA system speaker feeds in halls and function rooms, and 12V/24V lighting circuits in caravans, motorhomes and marine applications. The figure-8 profile keeps the two cores together during installation without needing separate bundling or trunking.

The mixed copper and copper-clad aluminium construction balances conductivity with cost and weight. Pure copper strands sit at the core of each conductor with CCA strands making up the remainder, giving better DC resistance than solid CCA wire whilst remaining lighter and more affordable than all-copper cable. The red/black colour coding runs the full 50m length, making it straightforward to maintain correct polarity when connecting multiple runs or terminating at distribution blocks.

Each core measures 5.0mm wide, with the full figure-8 cable measuring 10.0mm across both cores. The PVC sheath is flexible enough to route around tight bends in vehicle interiors and equipment racks without kinking, whilst being durable enough to resist abrasion when pulled through conduit or cable trays. The 50m reel allows multiple shorter runs to be cut from a single spool without waste.

Frequently Asked

What's the maximum current rating?

Each core is rated to 30A maximum continuous current. This makes the cable suitable for amplifier power feeds, subwoofer runs and 12V/24V distribution circuits where loads can reach 20-30A peaks.

Can this be used for mains voltage speaker systems?

No. This cable is designed for low-voltage DC applications (automotive, battery-powered systems, 12V/24V circuits) and low-voltage AC speaker runs from amplifiers. It is not rated for mains 230V AC wiring and must not be used for household electrical installations.

What's the difference between copper and copper-clad aluminium strands?

Copper-clad aluminium (CCA) has an aluminium core with a thin copper coating. It is lighter and cheaper than pure copper but has higher resistance. This cable uses a mix of both to balance cost, weight and conductivity, making it suitable for automotive and audio applications where pure copper would be overkill.

How flexible is the cable?

The multi-strand construction (130 strands per core) and PVC sheath give good flexibility for routing around vehicle interiors, speaker enclosures and equipment racks. The cable can be bent to a radius of approximately 50mm without kinking or damaging the conductors.
