Description

The Mercury Economy figure 8 speaker cable runs two parallel cores of copper clad aluminium (CCA) conductor, each comprising 42 strands of 0.2mm wire, giving a 1.32mm² cross-sectional area per core. The cable is rated to carry up to 15A continuous current, making it suitable for medium to high-power speaker installations in distributed audio, background music systems, PA networks and home theatre setups.

The figure 8 profile keeps both cores joined along their length, simplifying cable runs along skirting boards, trunking and ceiling voids without requiring separate management for each conductor. The white outer sheath carries a continuous black polarity line down one core, allowing installers to maintain correct phase throughout the run without needing to strip the cable to check inner colour coding. The 100m reel length suits commercial installation projects and larger domestic builds where multiple speaker zones need wiring from a central amplifier location.

CCA conductor construction trades some conductivity against aluminium for lower material cost compared to pure copper cable, while still delivering acceptable signal transmission for most speaker applications where cable runs do not exceed 20-30m. The 3.8 x 7.6mm overall cable dimensions allow it to fit into shallow cable channels and under carpets without creating pronounced ridges. The outer sheath is flexible enough for routing around corners and door frames without pre-heating or mechanical assistance.

Frequently Asked

What's the difference between CCA and pure copper speaker cable?

Copper clad aluminium uses an aluminium core with a thin copper coating, which reduces material cost but also reduces conductivity compared to solid copper. CCA cable works well for runs up to 20-30m in typical domestic and light commercial installations. For longer runs or critical high-fidelity applications, pure copper cable offers better signal transmission.

What speaker impedance and power rating does this cable support?

The 1.32mm² CSA and 15A max current rating suit 4-16 ohm speakers at power levels typical of distributed audio and PA systems. For specific amplifier and speaker pairings, calculate cable resistance over your run length and check it remains within the amplifier manufacturer's recommended total impedance range.

Can this cable be used outdoors?

The cable is not rated for direct outdoor exposure or burial. For outdoor speaker installations, use cable rated for UV exposure and moisture resistance, or run this cable inside conduit or trunking that provides environmental protection.

How is polarity marked?

One core has a continuous black line printed on the white sheath. This allows you to maintain consistent polarity across all speaker connections without stripping the cable to check inner conductor colours. Mark this as positive or negative at the amplifier end and maintain the same convention at every speaker.
