Description

The Mercury Economy figure-8 speaker cable is a 100m reel of 0.5mm² two-core cable with copper-clad aluminium conductors inside a dual-sheath red and black PVC jacket. Each core comprises 16 strands of 0.2mm diameter wire, giving a combined cross-sectional area of 0.5mm² per conductor. The cable is rated for a maximum current of 2.5A and suits low-power distributed audio installations where copper cost is a limiting factor.

Designed for budget background music systems, small retail installations and multi-room audio where cable runs exceed 50m and pure copper cost becomes prohibitive, the copper-clad aluminium construction reduces material cost whilst maintaining acceptable conductivity for 8-16 ohm passive speaker loads at moderate power levels. The figure-8 profile (2.2 x 4.4mm) allows the two cores to be separated cleanly at termination points without needing to strip outer sheathing, speeding installation in ceiling voids and under flooring.

The red and black colour-coding on the outer sheath helps maintain correct polarity across multi-zone installations. Copper-clad aluminium has higher resistance than pure copper, so this cable is not recommended for critical listening applications, subwoofer runs, or high-current amplifier outputs above 50W per channel. For domestic hi-fi or professional sound reinforcement, use pure copper cable instead. The 100m reel suits installers working on commercial projects where multiple rooms or zones need wiring from a single supply point.

Frequently Asked

What's the difference between copper-clad aluminium and pure copper speaker cable?

Copper-clad aluminium has a thin copper coating over an aluminium core, which reduces material cost but increases electrical resistance compared to pure copper. This makes it suitable for low-power distributed audio and background music systems, but not for critical listening, high-power amplifiers, or subwoofer runs where pure copper is required.

What maximum amplifier power can this cable handle?

The 2.5A current rating and 0.5mm² cross-sectional area suit amplifiers up to approximately 20-30W per channel into 8-ohm loads over typical domestic run lengths of 10-20m. Higher power or longer runs will cause voltage drop and potential overheating.

Can the two cores be separated?

Yes. The figure-8 profile allows the red and black cores to be pulled apart cleanly at termination points without stripping outer sheathing, which speeds installation when wiring multiple speaker positions from a central amplifier.

Is this cable suitable for in-wall installation?

The cable has a PVC sheath but does not carry specific fire-retardant or low-smoke certifications. Check local building regulations before installing inside walls, ceiling voids or under floors in commercial buildings.
