Description

The Mercury 2 x 26 figure 8 speaker cable is a 100m reel of copper-clad aluminium (CCA) conductor cable designed for home audio, distributed audio systems and small commercial PA installations. Each core contains 26 strands of 0.2mm diameter wire, giving a combined cross-sectional area of 0.82mm² per conductor. The cable is rated to carry up to 6A continuous current, which supports typical passive speaker loads at distances up to 15-20m without significant signal loss.

The figure 8 profile separates the two conductors into a side-by-side configuration with a black outer sheath and a white polarity line running along one conductor. This polarity marking allows installers to maintain consistent phase across multiple speaker pairs without needing to strip the cable to identify cores. The flat profile also makes the cable easier to run under carpets, along skirting boards and through shallow conduit compared to round twin-core designs.

CCA conductors combine an aluminium core with a copper cladding, reducing material cost and weight compared to pure oxygen-free copper (OFC) cables. This makes the Mercury suitable for budget-conscious installations where cable runs are moderate (under 20m per speaker) and audiophile-grade conductor purity is not required. The 100m reel length covers typical multi-room audio projects, allowing an installer to wire 4-6 rooms from a single reel with minimal waste.

Frequently Asked

What's the maximum cable run length for this speaker cable?

For typical 8-ohm passive speakers at domestic listening levels, runs up to 15-20m per speaker maintain acceptable signal integrity. Beyond 20m, the resistance of the CCA conductor may cause noticeable high-frequency roll-off. For longer runs, consider a larger CSA cable (1.5mm² or 2.5mm²) or active speakers with line-level input.

What does the white polarity line indicate?

The white line runs along one of the two cores and acts as a visual polarity marker. By convention, connect the white-marked core to the positive (red) terminal on both the amplifier and speaker to maintain consistent phase across all speakers in the system.

Can this cable be used outdoors?

The cable has a PVC sheath but is not UV-stabilised or rated for direct outdoor exposure. For outdoor speaker installations, use outdoor-rated speaker cable or run this cable inside conduit or trunking to protect it from UV degradation and moisture.

How does CCA compare to pure copper cable?

CCA (copper-clad aluminium) has higher resistance than pure copper, so it is best suited to shorter runs (under 20m) and moderate power levels. Pure copper cables offer lower resistance and are preferred for longer runs, high-power systems, or where maximum signal fidelity is required.
