Description

The Mercury is a 2-gang 13A rubber trailing socket rated for 250Vac mains supply, designed as a portable extension outlet for workshops, construction sites and garages where fixed sockets are inconvenient or unavailable. The socket body is moulded from heavy-duty rubber rather than plastic, giving impact resistance and flexibility under temperature variation. A fitted cable clamp at the rear provides strain relief where the mains cable enters the socket body.

Built to BS1363/A specification, the socket accepts standard UK 13A plugs and provides two individually live outlets, each capable of handling loads up to 13A (3,120W at 250Vac). The trailing socket design means it sits at the end of an extension lead rather than mounting to a wall or bench, allowing it to be positioned where power is needed and moved as work progresses. The rubber construction resists damage from being dropped, stepped on, or knocked against equipment.

The black rubber body has a textured grip surface that prevents slipping on wet or oily surfaces common in workshop environments. The cable clamp is pre-fitted during manufacture, reducing the risk of cable pull-out under tension and extending the service life of the socket when used with heavy equipment that may tug on the cable during operation. Each outlet is recessed into the body to protect plug pins from accidental contact when the socket is in use.

Frequently Asked

What cable gauge is recommended for use with this socket?

The socket is designed to handle 13A loads, so the extension cable feeding it should be rated at 13A minimum. For typical workshop use, 1.5mm² cable is standard for runs up to 25m. Longer runs or outdoor use may require 2.5mm² cable to reduce voltage drop.

Is the socket waterproof or outdoor-rated?

No. The Mercury trailing socket carries no IP rating and is designed for dry indoor workshop and garage use. It should not be used in wet conditions, outdoors without overhead cover, or where it may be submerged or exposed to direct rain.

Can both outlets be used simultaneously at full load?

Each outlet is rated at 13A, but the total combined load across both outlets should not exceed 13A when both are in use. For example, two 6A tools can run simultaneously, but two 13A appliances cannot.

What does the cable clamp do?

The cable clamp grips the outer sheath of the mains cable where it enters the socket body, preventing strain on the internal terminals if the cable is pulled or tugged during use. This reduces the risk of loose connections or internal wire damage over time.
