Medium Victorian Globe Pillar Light for Flat Piers - Black

A pillar light stands on top of a gate pier rather than hanging off a wall, and this is the Heritage version: a cast iron globe held in a banded cage above a turned cast base. The globe is the thing that separates the Heritage range from the rest of Harte's catalogue. It came straight off a Victorian original, and because it is a sphere rather than a tapered lantern it throws light evenly in every direction instead of down four flat faces. At 787mm tall and 370mm across the base it reads clearly from the road without overwhelming a standard pier.

This version is made for a flat pier cap. The base plate bolts down through the cap and the cable rises inside the pier from below, so it is worth checking whether your piers have a duct before you order. Most people buy two, one on each side of a driveway entrance, because a pair reads as a gate. It is cast iron throughout, hand sprayed in gloss black enamel, glazed in clear polycarbonate rather than glass, and it weighs 30.00KG, which is what keeps it steady on an exposed pier.

Harte rate it IP44, which covers splashing from any direction and suits an ordinary inland entrance. The lamp is an E27 screw fitting supplied without a bulb, so the output and colour are yours to choose; 7W at 2700K is the usual pick for an entrance. Everything is made to order in County Wexford, so allow two to five weeks, and any RAL colour can be sprayed instead of black. Fixing and wiring on a gate pier is work for a qualified electrician.

Will this fit my gate piers?

It is made for a flat pier cap and its base measures 370mm across, so measure the top of your pier first and make sure the base sits inside it. A base that overhangs looks unfinished and lets water sit underneath.

Do I need two?

Most driveway entrances take a pair, one on each pier, because two lights read as a gate. We sell them singly so you can buy one where only one pier exists.

How is it fixed and wired?

It bolts down through the pier cap and the cable comes up inside the pier. On an existing pier with no duct, a painted surface conduit down the back face is the usual route. The work needs a qualified electrician.

Is it glass or plastic?

Clear polycarbonate, which takes a knock better than glass on an exposed pier. Some other Harte ranges use hand-cut glass instead.

What does it weigh?

30.00KG. The weight is deliberate and it is what keeps the light steady on an open pier.

What is the difference between this and the Traditional pillar light?

Heritage uses a cast iron globe taken from a Victorian original, so light spreads evenly in all directions. Traditional uses a tapered four-sided lantern with flat glazed faces.
