Description

An artificial tree, 150cm tall, in green. At 150cm tall it comes to about the height of a door handle plus a metre. Placed where a real plant obviously could thrive, it invites comparison. Placed where one could not, it simply reads as green.

A natural, unpainted finish shows the material doing its own work — the grain, the weave or the fibre is the decoration, and no two pieces are identical because no two lengths of the raw material are. Concrete is heavy, cool to the touch and completely matt, and it is the weight that makes it work — a concrete base holds a tall piece steady in a way a lighter material cannot. Moulded plastic is light and unbothered by being knocked, which is what makes it sensible where something will be handled or moved often. It will chalk slightly after years of direct sun. The strength is in the section, not the bulk: steel holds its shape at a thickness that would flex in almost anything else. It is heavier than aluminium, which is a virtue indoors and a consideration if the piece has to be moved often.

Buy the pot separately unless the supplied one is genuinely good — the container is what gives away most faux plants.

Dusting is all it asks for, with a damp cloth on the finish and nothing solvent or abrasive.
