Description

A dining table, 76cm tall, in wood. The top is what the piece is judged on, because it is the part at eye level and the part everything is put down on. A frame can be repaired; a marked top is lived with. At 220cm wide it is wider than a standard interior door. Round suits conversation and small rooms; rectangular suits numbers and a wall. That choice matters more than the finish.

A dark finish reads as a shape rather than a surface, so the outline does the work and the detail recedes. Against a pale wall that is graphic; against a dark one the piece almost disappears. Acacia is dense, oily and naturally water-resistant, which is why it turns up on chopping boards and garden furniture alike. The grain is strongly figured, so no two boards read the same. The strength is in the section, not the bulk: steel holds its shape at a thickness that would flex in almost anything else. It is heavier than aluminium, which is a virtue indoors and a consideration if the piece has to be moved often. Seats 8. It arrives in 2 boxes.

A panel that carries weight over a span will sag eventually if the span is long enough. Shorter shelves, or a centre support, is what prevents it — not a thicker board. Height is standardised at 74 to 76cm for a reason — chairs are made to it. A table outside that range needs seating chosen to match.
