Description

A pendant light, 60cm wide, in matt black. At 170cm tall it comes to about the height of a door handle plus a metre.

A dark metal finish reads as a drawn line rather than a reflective surface, so the frame defines an edge without competing with what is inside it. That is why black suits a busy wall better than a bright metal. Cast and wrought iron are heavy by nature, and that weight is doing a job: it keeps the piece where it is put rather than shifting every time something brushes past. Iron also holds a hand-worked line that a machine-pressed metal cannot. It comes with its shade, so there is no second purchase to make it usable.

E14 lampholders, 10 of them up to 6-9W LED, and no bulb in the box. Because it is E14, bulbs are stocked everywhere and you are never tied to one supplier. It is dimmable, so the level is set at the wall rather than fixed at the bulb. The cable is black. It hangs from 74cm, so it clears a table without cutting the sightline. A Candle shaped bulb, which is the word to look for on the box.

A shade does two jobs at once and they pull against each other: it hides the bulb from your eye, and it decides how much light escapes sideways rather than up and down. A dense fabric does the first well and the second hardly at all. A fabric shade fades from the inside out rather than the outside in, because the bulb is closer than the window. A lining slows that considerably, which is most of what a lining is for.
