Description

This is a small flush fitting with a clear wine-shaped shade held beneath a round satin nickel plate. The shade narrows towards the top and widens below, so light spreads downwards and out to the sides rather than being held in. At 15cm across the plate it is a modest thing overhead, and it sits tight to the ceiling with no drop or rod adding height. It takes an E27 lamp, and because the shade is clear the lamp is on show, so pick one you are happy to look at.

We would fit this in a hallway, on a landing, in a small bedroom or a cloakroom, and it is one we reach for where a pendant would hang too low over a stair or a doorway. Low ceilings suit it, as do rooms where anything taller would be in the way. It will dim, given a dimmable lamp and a matching dimmer, which is worth arranging in a bedroom where a softer level in the evening earns its keep. Indoors and on a household supply only, in dry rooms rather than a bathroom zone or an outbuilding.

The metalwork carries a satin nickel finish, a soft grey sheen that stays quiet against white plaster and shows fingerprints less readily than a mirror one. Keeping the shade clear is most of the upkeep: turn the light off at the wall, wipe the shade with a barely damp cloth, dry it at once, then dust the plate with something soft. Marks announce themselves on clear shades sooner than on opal, so an occasional wipe pays.
