Five clear slim curved trapezium shades hang from a round satin nickel plate, each tapering to a narrow neck where the lampholder sits. The shades are shallow and gently waisted rather than bulbous, so the group stays light and open across a plate of 45cm. The drops are adjustable, which lets you set the shades in a level row or step them for something looser. Each shade takes an E27 lamp of up to 20W, and with suitable lamps and a dimmer switch fitted the fitting can be taken down to a low glow.

Kitchen islands and long dining tables are the obvious homes for it, since clear shades let light out sideways as well as down and keep a whole table lit rather than a pool at the centre. It also suits a tall hallway or a stairwell landing, where the suspension can be let out further. We would reach for it in a room that wants plenty of light without a broad drum pendant sitting heavily overhead, and it looks its best with decorative filament lamps, which stay on view through the clear shades.

The metalwork carries a satin nickel finish, a soft brushed grey that settles happily beside both warm and cool schemes and keeps the frame quiet while the shades do the work. Dust the shades with a dry duster, and lift any smears with a barely damp cloth, paying attention to the narrow necks where marks gather, then let everything dry before the power goes back on. It carries a one year warranty. How far down does it hang?

The drop is adjustable from 270mm at its shortest to 2270mm at its longest, so it can sit close to the ceiling over a hall table or fall well down over an island.

What lamps does it take, and how many?

Five E27 lamps, each rated up to 20W. LED is the sensible choice, and because the shades are clear the lamp shape is part of the look.

Can it be dimmed?

Yes, with dimmable lamps and a compatible dimmer switch. Neither the lamps nor a dimmer are included.

How wide is the ceiling plate?

The round plate measures 450mm in diameter, and the fitting weighs 6.5kg complete.

Is it suitable for a bathroom?

No. It is rated IP20, which keeps it to dry rooms such as kitchens, dining rooms, halls and living spaces, away from splashes and steam.

How should the clear shades be cleaned?

Switch off at the wall and let the lamps go cold, then use a dry duster followed by a slightly damp cloth on any fingerprints. Dry fully before restoring power.
