Description

A chest of drawers, 101cm tall, in multicoloured. At 42cm wide it is about the width of a laptop. In a bedroom it wants to be reachable without opening a wardrobe door into it, which is a check worth making with a tape measure.

Zinc weathers to a soft grey patina rather than rusting, and that dull, chalky surface is the finish people buy it for. It is a soft metal and dents rather than cracks. Pine is a softwood, so it marks more readily than oak or beech — and takes a paint or a wash far better, because the grain drinks it in. Marks in pine read as age rather than damage. 5 drawers. A cupboard behind a door.

5 carrying handles. An anti-tip wall strap is included, and on a tall piece it should be used.

Everything loosens with use. A yearly check of the fixings takes a minute and is the difference between a piece that stays square and one that develops a lean it never loses. Pull a drawer fully out if you can. Runners are where a cheap chest gives itself away. Dusting is all it asks for, with a damp cloth on the finish and nothing solvent or abrasive.
