Description

A glass pendant light, 82cm wide, in silver. At 82cm it is about as wide as a standard interior door. A pendant hangs in the sightline rather than at the edge of it, so it is the one light people look at directly. Over a table that puts it at eye level for everyone seated.

Silver and chrome sit comfortably with grey, blue and black schemes where a warm metal would fight them. Glass reads differently depending on what is behind it, which is why the same piece looks warm against a painted wall and cool against a window. It also means it wants cleaning more often than an opaque finish does. The shade is included rather than sold alongside, which is worth checking against anything cheaper.

Wiring is for 4 E27 lamps up to 10-12W LED, supplied separately. E27 is the standard screw fitting, so a replacement is a supermarket purchase rather than a specialist one. It is dimmable, so the level is set at the wall rather than fixed at the bulb. The cable is black. It hangs from 40cm, so it clears a table without cutting the sightline. A GLS shaped bulb, which is the word to look for on the box.

Two shades of the same size can light a room completely differently depending on how open the top and bottom are. A narrow top pushes light down into a pool; a wide one lets it wash the ceiling as well. A fabric shade fades from the inside out rather than the outside in, because the bulb is closer than the window. A lining slows that considerably, which is most of what a lining is for.
