Description

This wooden standing plaque carries a much-loved verse about a little boy, set in silver-toned lettering on a soft matt blue face. The poem begins 'Hold him a little longer, Rock him a little more' and closes on 'He is only a little boy, For such a little while', a gentle reminder of how quickly the early years pass. Around the words sit a crescent moon, scattered stars and the curved outlines of clouds, so the piece feels calm and dreamy rather than busy. It is a neat rectangle measuring 18cm by 13cm, large enough for the verse to read clearly and small enough to sit on a shelf without taking it over.

We think it belongs in a little boy's bedroom or nursery, where the words can be read in the last quiet minutes of the day. It suits a baby or toddler up to three, and it makes a thoughtful keepsake of his first years, one the family can hold on to long after he has outgrown the room. The pale blue tone and silver detail sit happily alongside white furniture, soft greys and other blues, and the moon and stars suit a bedtime or sky theme. Because it can stand or hang, it works on a chest of drawers, a windowsill or a bookshelf as well as on a nursery wall.

The plaque is made from MDF with a smooth matt finish and silver-toned printing. A fold-out easel on the back lets it stand upright on a flat surface, and a small hanger at the top takes a nail or picture hook when you would rather put it on the wall. Dust it with a soft dry cloth and keep it away from damp. For a gift, we like it wrapped in tissue: it is a gentle piece for a little boy's room, with a verse the family will want to keep.
