Description
This light-up decoration takes the shape of an old-fashioned steam train, with Santa seated inside its cab beside a little Christmas tree and a pile of wrapped presents. He holds a small teddy bear, and flecks of glitter sparkle around him behind the arched windows when the LED light comes on. The cab is a bright red under a curved, antiqued silver-grey roof, the boiler in front is a deep green banded in gold, and the engine rides on gold spoked wheels set into a silver-grey base. It stands 21.5cm tall, 24.3cm wide and 11cm deep, so it sits comfortably on a shelf or sideboard without crowding it.
We think it belongs wherever the family gathers in December: on the mantelpiece, a hall table, a dresser or a bookcase near the tree, where the glow from the cab catches the eye as the evenings draw in. It runs on batteries, so it needs no socket nearby and can go wherever it looks best. It is a decoration for dry rooms indoors, so keep it away from bathrooms, porches and anywhere damp. With its little locomotive and Santa scene, it also makes a cheerful Christmas gift, a gentle nod to the steam trains of old.
It takes three AA batteries, which are not included, so it is worth having a set ready before it takes its place or goes under the tree as a present. The antiqued finish gives the base, roof and chimney an aged silver look, while gold picks out the wheels, the bands around the boiler and the lamp at the front. To keep it looking its best, dust it with a soft dry cloth, and take the batteries out before packing it away after Christmas. If you are giving it, tuck three AA batteries in with it so it can light up the moment the wrapping comes off.
