Large Vintage Cast Iron Pedestal Post Light - Copper Shade

A pedestal light is a short post, and this is the Goose Neck version: the same hand spun copper teardrop head and sweeping arm as the wall light, carried on a turned cast iron base rather than a bracket. It stands 1309mm tall, a little above waist height, and reaches 485mm across. That height is chosen rather than arbitrary. It puts the shade above eye level for anyone walking past, so the lamp stays hidden, while keeping the pool of light on the path instead of throwing it across a lawn.

It belongs along a path, at the turn of a drive, beside steps, on a terrace edge or at the end of a planted border. The copper head weathers: bright when it arrives, dull within weeks, brown over a year or two, and greener over far longer. The cast iron base and galvanised steel column stay in gloss black enamel, so the copper sits as a head above a dark stem. It weighs 26.90KG and bolts down to a hard surface or on to a galvanised foundation frame set in concrete, which Harte make in three sizes and we sell separately.

Glazing is clear polycarbonate and the lamp is an ordinary E27 screw fitting supplied without a bulb, so the output and colour are yours to choose; 7W at 2700K suits the warmth of the metal. Harte rate it IP44 for splashing from any direction. Each one is cast, spun, sprayed and assembled to order in New Ross, County Wexford, so allow two to five weeks, and a RAL colour can replace the black on the base if you ask when ordering.

How tall is a pedestal light and why that height?

Will the copper change colour?

Yes. It dulls within weeks, browns over a year or two and moves towards green over far longer. Coastal air speeds it up. The black base does not change.

What does it weigh?

26.90KG. That is enough to stay put on a path edge but it still needs bolting down.

What bulb does it take?

An E27 screw lamp, not supplied. A 7W LED at 2700K is the usual choice. The fitting is rated to 100W maximum in total.
