Description
This large earthenware biscuit barrel takes the shape of Santa's smiling face, and his red hat lifts off as the lid. Under the hat sits a white brim with a round pompom at one side, then a warm peach face with closed, happy eyes, rosy cheeks and a little pink nose, all framed by a full white beard modelled in raised, wavy curls. A glaze gives the white body and the red hat a soft shine. It stands 19.5cm tall, 14cm wide and 13cm deep, a generous size for a kitchen worktop or sideboard.
We think it is a cheerful centrepiece for the Christmas kitchen, set out on the worktop, the dresser or the breakfast table right through December. Fill it with biscuits, wrapped sweets or homemade treats and it soon becomes the jar everyone reaches for when friends and family call round. It also makes a warm Christmas gift for a keen baker, a generous host or anyone who loves bringing out the festive pieces early, and once the season is over it packs away ready to come out again next year.
The barrel is made from glazed earthenware, and a white collar on the underside of the hat fits into the opening to keep the lid seated on the body. As with any glazed earthenware, we suggest washing it by hand in warm soapy water, drying it well and wiping the outside with a damp cloth to keep the colours bright. Lift the lid off carefully and set it down gently, as earthenware can chip if knocked. For a gift, fill it with a favourite packet of biscuits or a bag of sweets before you wrap it, so it is ready to enjoy the moment it is opened.
