Description

The front face is a plain black square, and behind it the funnel sits at 45 degrees, so the beam leaves at an angle instead of dropping straight down. That makes it useful anywhere you want light pushed towards a surface rather than onto the floor below. It takes a GU10 lamp, the lampholder is already fitted, and the square face measures 93mm across. Nothing about it asks for attention: the dark recess keeps the glare tucked well back inside the trim.

We reach for angled spotlights like this in kitchens, where a row of them can wash a worktop or a splashback from the side rather than from directly above. They work just as well over a bookcase, aimed at a picture, or in a hallway where light bounced off a wall is kinder than light overhead. Pick a lamp up to 12W and you can set the brightness and colour temperature to suit the room. Dimming is possible, but it needs a dimmable lamp and a suitable dimmer, neither of which comes with it.

The black finish runs across the visible edge and down into the funnel, so the two read as one piece and the lamp stays the brightest thing on show. It is very light in the hand and carries a two year warranty. For cleaning, turn the power off, wait until the lamp is cold, then wipe the square edge with a dry cloth and take a soft brush round the inner funnel; polishes and solvents will mark the finish. Keep it to dry rooms, so hallways, living rooms and kitchens rather than anywhere near a shower.
