Description

The Kimitsu ornament is a tall oval vessel of aluminium in a nickel finish. Its surface is worked into an open, coral-like lattice that lets you see straight into the centre. It stands 47.5cm tall and measures 25.5cm across, with a narrower top edge, a fuller middle and a small round foot at the base. Inside sits a clear glass inner, so the piece is a candle holder as much as a sculptural ornament. Because it is decor rather than a light, it needs no power and belongs in indoor rooms.

We would put it where the light can play across the lattice: a sideboard in the dining room, a console table in the hallway, or the floor beside a fireplace, where its height lets it hold its own. With a candle burning inside the glass, the openwork throws lacy shadows across the nearby walls. In daylight the nickel catches whatever light is around it. It suits a coastal or organic look, because the pattern reads like sea coral, yet the silver tone sits just as comfortably with modern greys and whites. A pair either side of a mantelpiece works well too.
