Description

A wall light, 22cm tall, in black. At 35cm wide it is about the width of a laptop. A wall light is fixed, so its position is permanent. Decide it against the furniture that will sit beneath it rather than against an empty wall.

A dark finish reads as a shape rather than a surface, so the outline does the work and the detail recedes. Against a pale wall that is graphic; against a dark one the piece almost disappears. Wood is the one material here that will not look identical to the photograph, because grain is not repeatable. It also means it takes a knock as a mark rather than a crack, and marks in wood age better than marks in paint.

It takes 1 E27 screw-fit bulb up to 6-9W LED. E27 is the commonest fitting on any supermarket shelf, so replacements are never a hunt. It is dimmable, so the level is set at the wall rather than fixed at the bulb. The head adjusts, so you can aim the light at a book rather than a ceiling. A Golfball shaped bulb, which is the word to look for on the box.

The light you actually see is the light that comes THROUGH the shade, not the light from the bulb. That is why the same bulb reads warm behind a cream fabric and cold behind a white one. A fabric shade fades from the inside out rather than the outside in, because the bulb is closer than the window. A lining slows that considerably, which is most of what a lining is for.
