A lampshade, 30cm wide, in blue. A tapered shade throws more light down than out, which is what you want over a reading chair and not what you want if the lamp is the only light in the room. At 30cm wide it is about the width of a laptop. Changing a shade changes a room without touching the wiring, which makes it the cheapest worthwhile change in a house you have just moved into.

A cool colour recedes: it makes a piece read as further away and a room as larger, which is why cool tones suit small spaces better than their reputation for coldness suggests. Cast and wrought iron are heavy by nature, and that weight is doing a job: it keeps the piece where it is put rather than shifting every time something brushes past. Iron also holds a hand-worked line that a machine-pressed metal cannot.
