Description
The Iwate is a flat ceramic vase with a large oval opening through its body, so whatever stands behind it shows through the middle. A short, narrow neck is set off-centre at one end of a gently sloping shoulder, and the whole piece wears a speckled beige finish with a soft, lightly textured surface. It stands 41cm high, 21cm long and 8cm wide, tall enough to hold its own on a sideboard while staying slim. It is made for artificial and dried flowers only, so think of it as a home for long-lasting arrangements rather than fresh stems in water.
Being only 8cm wide, it fits where a round vase would struggle: a narrow mantelpiece, a windowsill, a bookshelf or a slim hallway console. The open centre keeps it from looking heavy, and the neutral beige sits happily alongside white walls, warm wood, linen and stone, so it suits a calm living room, a bedroom or a dining room equally well. We like it best with something airy in the neck, a few dried grasses, a sprig of dried eucalyptus or a couple of artificial poppies, so the shape of the vase stays the main event. With no flowers in it, it still reads as a sculptural piece in its own right.
Ceramic is a dense, hard material, and at 1.76KG the Iwate has enough weight to sit firmly on a shelf with a tall arrangement in its neck. The speckled beige finish carries on round the inner edge of the opening, so the vase looks just as good from an angle as from the front. Because it is made for dried and artificial flowers only, there is no water to change and nothing to wilt, which means an arrangement that pleases you can simply stay put. Give it a level spot away from the very edge of a shelf and it will look after itself.
