Description

The Knightsbridge OP94 is an IP66-rated outdoor 2-gang 13A socket with one USB-A and one USB-C charging port, housed in a high-impact polycarbonate enclosure with a smoked black locking lid. The socket provides two standard UK 3-pin outlets rated at 13A each on 230V mains, plus USB charging at a shared 5V DC 4.0A output (20W maximum combined across both ports). The IP66 rating confirms the enclosure is dust-tight and protected against powerful water jets from any direction, making it suitable for external installation in gardens, patios, workshops and covered outdoor areas.

The socket is installed surface-mounted onto an external wall or post using the built-in fixing points and multiple 20mm cable entry knockouts on the rear and base of the enclosure. The transparent smoked lid provides cable access while protecting the outlets from rain and debris, and includes a secure catch plus an optional padlock hole for additional security. Single-pole switching means only the live line is isolated when the socket is switched off, which is standard for outdoor socket applications where isolation is provided at the consumer unit. The IK06 impact rating confirms the polycarbonate body can withstand moderate impact from garden tools or recreational equipment.

The USB-A and USB-C ports share a 20W maximum output, allowing simultaneous charging of two devices at lower wattages or fast-charging of a single device at up to 20W depending on cable and device capability. Can this be installed in the rain?

Yes. The IP66 rating confirms the socket is protected against powerful water jets from any direction when the lid is closed. The socket can be installed on external walls, in gardens and on patios where it will be exposed to rain. The lid must be closed when outlets are not in use to maintain the IP rating.

What's the difference between IP66 and IP65?

IP66 provides protection against powerful water jets (12.5 litres per minute at 100kPa pressure), whereas IP65 protects against water jets at lower pressure. Both ratings are suitable for outdoor installation, but IP66 offers higher protection in exposed positions or areas prone to pressure-washing.

Can I use this to charge an electric bike or scooter?

Knightsbridge explicitly states this socket is not suitable for EV charging. The USB ports are rated at 20W maximum shared output, which is suitable for phones, tablets and small devices only. For e-bike or scooter battery charging, use the 13A outlets only and ensure the charger draws no more than 13A (3,120W) per outlet.

How is the socket wired and mounted?

The socket is surface-mounted using the built-in fixing points on the rear of the enclosure. Cable entry is via multiple 20mm knockouts on the rear and base. The socket requires standard 230V mains wiring with earth connection (Class I). Installation must be carried out by a qualified electrician in compliance with BS 7671 wiring regulations.
