Description
The Impasto Brushstrokes Set comprises two framed canvases, each 120cm high by 80cm wide, featuring bold black brushstrokes on a cream-toned ground. The brushstrokes are hand-embellished with raised paint applied in the impasto technique, creating visible three-dimensional texture on the canvas surface. Each canvas sits in a black wood-effect frame with a 4cm depth, hung portrait orientation only.
Designed for living room feature walls, bedroom headboard positions, and hallway pairs where a modern abstract statement is needed without colour saturation, the two canvases can hang side-by-side with 10-20cm spacing or on opposing walls for a dialogue effect. The black-on-cream palette works with neutral, monochrome and warm-toned interiors, and the portrait format suits vertical wall spaces above sideboards, consoles or low seating.
The impasto technique builds thickness by layering paint with a palette knife or stiff brush, leaving ridges and peaks that catch directional light from windows or picture lights. This means the canvases look different depending on the time of day and the angle of view — flat and graphic under diffused overhead light, but heavily textured under low-angle natural light. Each piece weighs 2.8kg, requiring two wall fixings per canvas (fixings not included). The canvases hang on integral hooks fixed to the rear stretcher frame.

Frequently Asked
Are the brushstrokes identical between the two canvases?
No. Each canvas features a different composition of brushstrokes, designed to work as a pair rather than as mirror images or duplicates. The marks relate to one another but do not repeat.
Can the canvases be hung landscape orientation?
The integral hanging hooks are fixed for portrait orientation only. Re-mounting the hooks would require removing the canvas from the stretcher frame, which is not recommended for hand-embellished pieces.
What wall fixings are needed?
Each canvas weighs 2.8kg and requires two secure wall fixings rated to at least 5kg each. For plasterboard walls use plasterboard anchors; for brick or concrete use appropriate wall plugs and screws. Fixings are not included.
How is the texture applied?
The impasto texture is hand-applied using palette knives and brushes to build up layers of paint above the canvas surface, creating ridges and peaks that remain visible and tactile once dry. This is the same technique used by Van Gogh and Rembrandt to add dimensionality to oil paintings.
