Description

The Hydra is a 10.5cm diameter surface-mounted LED downlight with an integrated 10W 3000K LED housed in a matte gold aluminium cylinder. The fitting sits 7cm proud of the ceiling, directing light downward through a 120° beam angle that casts even illumination across floors and worktops without creating sharp-edged pools or excessive contrast.

Designed for surface mounting where recessed downlights are impractical due to shallow ceiling voids, solid ceilings or existing structural constraints, the Hydra fixes directly onto the ceiling surface using the integral mounting plate. The IP44 rating makes it suitable for bathrooms, utility rooms and covered outdoor areas such as porches or undercroft ceilings where occasional water spray or condensation is present. The 3000K colour temperature produces a warm white light that sits between the yellower warmth of traditional incandescent bulbs and the cooler white of daylight-rated LEDs.

The matte gold finish is a brushed, non-reflective gold tone that reduces glare under bright daylight and suits warm-toned interiors, brass door furniture and gold-finish taps or handles. The aluminium construction keeps the weight at approximately 200g per fitting, making it simple to fix to plasterboard ceilings with appropriate fixings. The high CRI (colour rendering index) rating ensures that fabric textures, wood grain and paint colours appear accurately under the light rather than being flattened or distorted by poor-quality LED spectrum.

Can this be used in a bathroom?

Yes. The IP44 rating protects the fitting against water splashes from any direction, making it suitable for bathroom zones 2 and 3 (outside the shower enclosure and bath surround). It is not rated for installation directly above a shower head or bath (zone 1) where direct water jets are present.

Is the LED replaceable?

No. The LED is integrated into the fitting and designed to last the lifetime of the product (typically 20,000-30,000 hours). When the LED eventually fails, the entire fitting would need replacing rather than just the bulb.

What's the beam angle and what does that mean in practice?

The 120° beam angle creates a wide cone of light that spreads evenly across a room rather than creating a narrow spotlight effect. At a typical ceiling height of 2.4m, one Hydra will illuminate a floor area of approximately 3-4m diameter, making it suitable for general ambient lighting rather than focused task lighting.

How is it fixed to the ceiling?

The Hydra mounts directly onto the ceiling surface via a circular backplate. The backplate is wired into the mains supply, then the outer cylinder clips or screws onto the backplate to conceal the wiring. Full installation instructions are provided in the downloadable manual above.
