Description
The Hodges is a small outdoor wall lantern with a curved metal roof in ash black finish, clear seeded glass panels on three sides, and a metal loop crown detail. The lantern housing an E27 bulb fitting (sold separately) behind glass with deliberate bubble and seed texture that scatters light into a softer wash across adjacent walls and pathways.
Designed for smaller exterior installations such as porch entrances, side doors, garage entries and garden wall positions where a wall-mounted light is needed but space or proportion limits larger bracket fittings, the Hodges projects 180mm from the wall and stands 297mm tall. The IP44 rating provides protection against solid objects larger than 1mm and water splashing from any direction, making it suitable for sheltered outdoor positions such as under eaves, within recessed doorways or on walls protected by a porch canopy.
The ash black finish on the metalwork is a low-sheen powder coat that sits between charcoal and true black, absorbing rather than reflecting daylight. The curved roof detail references American Prairie School architecture where extended horizontal rooflines and simple geometric forms were used to integrate buildings with their landscape surroundings. The loop at the crown is both decorative and functional, mirroring traditional lantern-carrying handles while providing a visual anchor point at the top of the fitting.
The seeded glass texture is created during the glass-forming process, trapping small air bubbles within the pane to give a vintage hand-blown appearance. When lit, the seeds act as micro-lenses that refract light in different directions, softening the direct beam from an exposed filament bulb and creating small sparkle points across the glass surface. This works particularly well with warm-white LED filament bulbs or traditional incandescent Edison-style bulbs rated up to 60W.

Frequently Asked
What IP rating does this carry and where can it be used?
The Hodges is IP44-rated, providing protection against solid objects larger than 1mm and water splashing from any direction. It suits sheltered outdoor positions such as under eaves, within covered porches, or on walls protected by a canopy. It is not suitable for fully exposed positions subject to direct rain.
What bulb does it take?
The lantern takes a standard E27 bulb up to 60W maximum. Bulbs are sold separately. Most users pair this with a warm-white LED filament bulb between 4-8W and 2200K-2700K to complement the seeded glass and ash black finish.
How does the seeded glass affect the light output?
The seeded glass contains small air bubbles that scatter and refract light, softening direct beam from the bulb and creating small sparkle points across the glass surface. This reduces glare and gives a gentler, more diffused light spread compared to clear flat glass.
What fixing method does it use?
The lantern mounts to an external wall via a rear-mounted backplate with fixing points for screws and masonry plugs. Electrical connection is made through a rear cable entry point. Professional outdoor electrical installation is recommended to ensure correct sealing and compliance with outdoor wiring regulations.
