Description
The Hereford is a traditional outdoor wall down lantern cast from die-cast aluminium with a matt black powder-coated finish, measuring 294mm tall and 150mm wide with a 221mm projection from the wall. The lantern housing contains clear glass panels on four sides with a horizontal bar dividing each panel, and a peaked metal roof above. A decorative scroll bracket supports the lantern and curves upward from the wall plate. The E27 bulb holder inside sits below the horizontal bar, directing light downward onto paths and doorsteps.
Designed for sheltered outdoor positions such as porches, covered doorways, and recessed entryways, the Hereford carries an IP43 rating providing protection against solid objects larger than 1mm and water spray at angles up to 60° from vertical. This makes it suitable for positions where the fitting sits under an overhang or porch roof that shields it from direct rain. The downward light pattern illuminates the immediate area below without causing glare at eye level, making it a functional choice for entrance lighting where you need to see steps, door locks and deliveries.
The die-cast aluminium construction resists corrosion in damp coastal and urban environments more reliably than pressed steel alternatives. The matt black finish softens reflections under daylight and pairs with black ironwork, slate roofing, dark timber frames and Victorian or Edwardian architecture. The scroll bracket and peaked roof reference traditional English coaching lanterns without mimicking historical fixtures directly. The fitting accepts any standard E27 LED, halogen or filament bulb up to 60W (sold separately), giving control over colour temperature and brightness to suit the specific doorway or garden wall.

Frequently Asked
What does the IP43 rating mean for outdoor use?
IP43 provides protection against solid objects larger than 1mm and water spray at angles up to 60° from vertical. This means the Hereford is suitable for sheltered positions such as covered porches, recessed doorways and under eaves where it is protected from direct rainfall, but not for fully exposed walls open to driving rain.
What bulb does it take?
The Hereford takes a standard E27 (Edison screw) bulb up to 60W. Bulbs are sold separately. Most users pair this with a warm-white LED bulb between 6-10W and 2700K for porch and entrance lighting.
Can it be mounted upside-down to face upward?
The fitting is designed as a downlight with the bulb holder positioned to direct light downward. Mounting it inverted would place the bulb at the top of the glass enclosure, which may cause heat buildup and is not recommended by the manufacturer.
How is the die-cast aluminium finish maintained?
Wipe the lantern periodically with a damp cloth to remove dust and pollen. For coastal installations, rinse with fresh water every few months to prevent salt buildup. Avoid abrasive cleaners that can scratch the powder-coated finish.
