Description

A cabinet, 50cm tall, in natural. At 40cm wide it is about the width of a laptop. A cabinet is closed storage in a room where open storage would look untidy, which is why it earns its place in a hall or a living room rather than a utility.

A natural surface lightens or mellows slightly with sunlight over a few years. That is the material ageing rather than the finish failing, and most people prefer it at five years to how it looked at one. Timber is the one material here that cannot match its photograph, because grain does not repeat. It also means wear arrives as patina rather than damage, which is the argument for wood over a printed finish. Rattan is a climbing palm, steamed and bent rather than cut and joined, which is why the curves are continuous and the whole piece weighs so little. Every length differs slightly in colour, so no two pieces match exactly. Particle board is timber chips bonded under pressure. It is dimensionally stable and it keeps a large panel affordable, which is why it sits behind most flat-pack furniture rather than in front of it. 1 carrying handles.

An anti-tip wall strap is included, and on a tall piece it should be used.

A panel that carries weight over a span will sag eventually if the span is long enough. Shorter shelves, or a centre support, is what prevents it — not a thicker board. Check whether the shelves move. A fixed shelf decides what the cabinet can hold for its whole life; an adjustable one lets it hold bottles this year and files the next.
