Description
This resin tree decoration takes the shape of the Hogwarts Express, the steam engine from the Harry Potter stories, picked out in deep red with black and gold detail. The boiler is banded in gold, the chimney has a gold top, and the black smokebox at the front carries the engine's number, 5972. Black wheels with silver rods run beneath the body, and the cab at the back has its own small windows and a gold panel on the side. It measures 13.4cm by 9.1cm across its face and is 2.3cm deep, a good size to catch the eye among the branches.
It hangs from a red ribbon threaded through a small loop on top of the boiler, so it goes straight onto a branch, and it looks just as good on a hook in a window, tied to a wreath or strung along a garland over the fireplace. We like it hung at eye level near the front of the tree, where the gold bands pick up the glow of the fairy lights. As a Christmas gift it is small enough to tuck into a stocking, and it is the kind of decoration that comes out of the box first every December.
It is made from resin, which holds fine detail well, so the rivets along the roof and the bands around the boiler stand out crisply. Dust it with a soft dry cloth when it needs it, and at the end of the season wrap it in tissue paper and store it somewhere dry so the paintwork stays bright for the years ahead. For a tree with a theme, hang it alongside plain red and gold baubles that pick up its colours, or give it a branch to itself where it can steam along undisturbed.
