Description
This collectable porcelain mug carries the sign of Borgin & Burkes, the dealer in dark artefacts on Knockturn Alley in the Harry Potter stories. The round body is black with a matt finish, and most of the design is printed in gold: "Dark Artifacts" across the top, "Borgin & Burkes" in tall shopfront lettering, a watchful eye emblem, a "Knockturn Alley" banner and the date 1863, all set among gold scrolls and small stars. At its centre, an ornate oval frame holds a stack of pale skulls under a glass dome on a deep green ground. It stands 9.8cm tall, 12.5cm wide and 8cm deep.
It is a mug made for using as much as for keeping. It holds 340ml, a generous cup of tea or coffee, so it earns its place on a desk at work or beside the kettle at home. Between brews, the black and gold print looks just as good on a kitchen dresser or a bookcase. As a collectable piece it sits well on a shelf of favourite books and keepsakes from the stories, and it makes a thoughtful gift that is easy to wrap and easy to love.
The mug is made from porcelain, finished with a gold rim around the top and a curving gold handle with scrolled ends that sweeps out from the side. Inside, the off-white surface keeps one last detail: an eye emblem, printed in dark ink at the bottom, which comes into view as you reach the final sip. As general good practice for porcelain with gold detail, we would wash it by hand in warm soapy water, dry it with a soft cloth and keep scourers well away from the gold. Set it beside a tin of favourite loose-leaf tea and it is a gift ready to give.
