The Halbine lamp holder adapter is a white plastic splitter that screws into a single E27 socket and gives you three. Its own E27 cap sits on top of a round central body, and three angled sockets reach outwards and downwards from it, each taking an E27 bulb of up to 20W. It stands 7.5cm tall, measures 19cm across and weighs 0.225KG packed. Bulbs are not included, so you can choose your own. No water rating is given, so we keep it indoors, in dry rooms.

It suits a pendant or ceiling fitting with an E27 holder where one bulb leaves the room short of light, such as a hallway, a landing, a loft, a workshop or a spare room. Three bulbs from one point give more light, spread more widely, and because each socket takes its own bulb, you can mix colour temperatures or bulb shapes to suit the room. Before you buy, look at the space around the holder: at 19cm across, the adapter needs more room than a snug shade or a tight glass diffuser usually leaves, so it is at its best on an open pendant or a bare holder.

The body is white plastic, and plastic is a light material, so the adapter adds little weight to the existing holder. It is made for a 220-240V, 50/60Hz mains supply, which covers UK homes. Keep every bulb at 20W or less; most household LED bulbs draw well under that and run cooler than old filament bulbs. For care, a soft, dry cloth keeps the white plastic clean once the bulbs have cooled.
