Description
Our Green Man tealight candle holder takes the form of an old tree trunk, with a craggy face looking out from the bark. Leaves in two shades of green form his heavy brows and sweeping moustache, while his mouth hangs open beneath them and gnarled branches curl up on either side like arms. The rest of the piece is finished in a warm bronze, with pale highlights picking out every ridge of bark, knot and root, so the detail reads clearly from across a room. The rim at the top is ringed with chunky bark-like blocks, and the opening inside takes a single tealight. It is made from resin, also known as polystone, and stands 11cm tall, 10cm wide and 9cm deep.
At that size it sits comfortably on a mantelpiece, a bookshelf or a side table. Lit in the evening, the flame glows from the open top of the trunk and throws soft light over the bark and leaves, bringing the face forward in a way that suits a cosy sitting room, a reading corner or a hallway table. It works unlit too, as a small sculpture with plenty of character in daylight, and it sits happily among other natural textures such as pebbles, driftwood or trailing houseplants.
The face, branches and roots form one freestanding piece, and small feet underneath lift the base clear of the surface it stands on. Use a tealight in its own metal or plastic cup, keep the holder away from curtains and anything else that might catch, and never leave a burning candle unattended. To keep the finish looking its best, dust it with a soft dry cloth, with a soft brush for the deeper grooves of the bark and the creases around the eyes. Set it beside a stack of old books and it brings a little woodland mystery to the shelf, lit or not.
