Description

The Grampian is an 820mm Victorian-style outdoor wall lantern in black cast aluminium, featuring a tapered glass enclosure set on decorative scrollwork mounting brackets. The lantern head sits on a curved cast bracket approximately 490mm from the wall, housing a single E27 bulb fitting (bulb sold separately) behind four clear glass panels. The IP44 rating provides protection against rain and dust for year-round outdoor use.

Designed for traditional and period-style facades, the Grampian suits front entrances, side gates, courtyard walls and covered porch areas where Victorian or Georgian architecture calls for historically appropriate fittings. The 820mm overall height and 490mm projection from the wall give the lantern a presence suited to two-storey homes and taller entrance porches. The scrollwork bracket and turned finial reference 19th-century street lighting without replicating museum-piece detail.

The cast aluminium construction resists corrosion better than pressed steel alternatives common in this style, and the powder-coated black finish holds its colour under UV exposure. The clear glass panels allow the full output of the chosen bulb to illuminate the wall and ground below, making the lantern function as wayfinding lighting for paths and steps as well as decorative accent. At 60W maximum rating, the fitting accepts both traditional filament bulbs for a warm glow and modern LED equivalents for lower running costs.

What bulb does it take?

The Grampian takes a standard E27 (Edison screw) bulb up to 60W maximum. Bulbs are sold separately. Most users choose a warm-white LED bulb between 6-10W and 2700K for outdoor applications, giving equivalent light output to a traditional 40-60W filament bulb at lower running cost.

Is it suitable for exposed coastal locations?

The IP44 rating protects against rain and dust, and the cast aluminium construction resists corrosion better than pressed steel. For direct salt-spray exposure in coastal locations, additional protective coating or more frequent maintenance may be needed to preserve the finish over time.

How is it mounted to the wall?

The lantern mounts via a backplate fixed to the wall with screws and wall plugs (not supplied). The wiring enters through a knockout in the backplate. Installation requires connection to mains wiring and should be carried out by a qualified electrician in accordance with BS 7671 wiring regulations.

Can it be used on a pillar or post rather than a wall?

This model is specifically designed as a wall-mounted lantern with an upward-facing mounting bracket. Elstead produces separate pillar/post variants of the Grampian range if a post-top fitting is needed.
