Description

A shelving unit, 180cm tall, in black. At 180cm tall it comes to about the height of a door handle plus a metre. Against a chimney breast or in an alcove it reads as built in; in the middle of a wall it reads as furniture. Both work and they are different jobs.

A dark finish reads as a shape rather than a surface, so the outline does the work and the detail recedes. Against a pale wall that is graphic; against a dark one the piece almost disappears. Rattan is a climbing palm, steamed and bent rather than cut and joined, which is why the curves are continuous and the whole piece weighs so little. Every length differs slightly in colour, so no two pieces match exactly. Acacia is dense, oily and naturally water-resistant, which is why it turns up on chopping boards and garden furniture alike. The grain is strongly figured, so no two boards read the same.

7 shelves. An anti-tip wall strap is included, and on a tall piece it should be used. A cupboard behind a door. 2 carrying handles.

Furniture fails at the joints and the runners long before the surface wears out, which is why the way a piece is put together matters more than what it is finished with. Anything tall and open needs fixing to the wall. It is one screw and a bracket, and it is the difference between furniture and a hazard in a house with children. Dusting is all it asks for, with a damp cloth on the finish and nothing solvent or abrasive.
