Description

The E40 lampholder is the big one, the goliath size found on older industrial fittings, mill pendants and large glass shades, and lamps to suit it are getting harder to buy. This adaptor answers that. It threads into the E40 holder and presents a standard E27 socket in its place, so an ordinary screw lamp fits straight in. The body is white and plain, 41mm across and 51mm tall, so it adds very little above the holder. One socket, one lamp, nothing to set or adjust.

We reach for this where someone has a fitting worth keeping and a lampholder that nothing modern will screw into: a salvaged workshop light, a big pendant over a stairwell, a shop fitting brought into a kitchen or a garage lamp that still earns its keep. A low wattage LED lamp is what we would put in it, and the E27 lamps it accepts are sold everywhere, so changing a lamp stops being a search. The lamp itself is bought separately.

The white finish sits quietly against a pale shade or ceiling rose and disappears once a lamp is in. To clean it, turn the power off at the switch, take the lamp out and wipe the outside with a dry cloth; keep moisture and sprays well away from the contacts, and let the lamp lose its heat before you handle it. It carries a one year warranty.
