Description

Amber glass shaped like a wine glass sits against matt black metalwork, so this reads as a piece of glassware set against the wall rather than a plain shade. The warm tone in the glass takes the edge off the light and throws a honeyed cast onto the surface behind it. At 18cm wide it stays neat and close to the wall, and a toggle switch on the fitting itself lets you work it on the spot without reaching for the wall switch.

It suits the places where a small pool of warm light does more good than a bright wash: beside a bed, along a hallway, in an alcove or either side of a fireplace. We reach for it in older rooms and in bars and snugs, where the amber glass has something to play against. It takes an E27 lamp, and we would choose a clear ST64 or globe so the filament shows through the glass; a standard GLS or a slim tubular works just as well if you want less on show. Wattage is capped at 20W, and dimming is possible with a compatible lamp and dimmer.

The glass is the whole character of the piece, so keep it clear: a wipe with a barely damp cloth, then dry it off before switching back on, and lift dust from the black metal with a soft brush. The finish is a flat black with no shine to mark, which forgives fingerprints better than plated metal. It carries a one year warranty. The wider Cawdor range runs to flush fittings in the same wine glass shape, along with jar, globe and diamond glass, in finishes from antique brass and copper to polished chrome and pewter. Lamps are not included.
