Description

A slim clear glass tube on a standard screw cap, narrow enough to sit inside a cage fitting or hang bare on a flex without looking bulky. It draws 4W and gives a crisp 4000K white, cooler and cleaner than the yellow of an old filament lamp, and the light spreads all the way around the tube rather than in one direction. It dims with a compatible dimmer for quieter evening light, though a dimmer is not supplied. At 185mm long it reads as a line of light rather than a blob.

We use lamps like this where the bulb is meant to be seen: open pendants over a kitchen island, cage and cradle fittings, bare drops down a stairwell, and wall lights with no shade to hide behind. The neutral white suits rooms where you are doing something rather than sitting still, so kitchens, utility rooms, workshops and home offices. If you prefer a warmer, softer glow for a sitting room or bedroom, this is the wrong end of the scale and we would look at a warmer white instead.

The body is clear glass with an E27 cap, and it is light in the hand, so it hangs happily from a slender flex. Clear glass shows dust and fingermarks more than opal, so once it has cooled we wipe the tube with a dry microfibre cloth, holding it at the cap rather than twisting the glass, and keep sprays and damp cloths away. It is a lamp for dry rooms indoors on the usual household supply, and it wants a dimmer rated for LED if the dimming is to behave. It carries a three year warranty. A run of them on staggered drops over a long table gives the line-of-light look without any shades at all.
