Description

This is the small candle bulb we hand to customers who want light rather than decoration on show. It draws 4W and gives back 470 lumens, so it stands in for a modest incandescent candle without the heat or the running cost. The colour is a crisp cool white at 4000K, cleaner and brighter in feel than a warm yellow, and it has an E14 cap. It dims too, provided the circuit already has a dimmer suited to LED loads; no dimmer comes with it.

It suits multi-lamp fittings above all: chandeliers, candelabra, wall lights and small pendants where several lamps share the work and each one carries only part of the load. It earns its place just as easily in table and floor lamps, bedside fittings and hall lanterns with narrow candle holders. Because the clear body leaves the light source in plain view, we would use it behind a shade or a glass, or in a fitting high enough that you are not looking straight into it. For close reading at eye level, something opaque is kinder on the eyes.

The clear finish keeps the profile slim and unfussy, which counts when a fitting holds a row of lamps and any bulkiness shows. Wipe it only once the light has been off long enough for the lamp to cool, using a dry cloth and no cleaning fluids, and keep moisture away from the cap and contacts. It carries a three year warranty. We keep this as our everyday candle lamp for E14 fittings, the one we reach for when a chandelier needs all of its lamps changed at once and the light should read the same across the whole fitting.

Will it work on my existing dimmer?

It dims only on a dimmer designed for LED loads. Older resistive dimmers made for filament lamps can cause flicker or buzz, or refuse to dim down smoothly. A dimmer is not supplied with the bulb.

How big is it?

It measures 35mm across the widest part of the candle and 100mm tall overall, so it fits most standard E14 candle holders and small shade carriers without crowding them.

What sort of white light does it give?

4000K, a cool neutral white with no yellow cast. It reads crisper than a 2700K warm white, which makes it useful in hallways, landings and work areas rather than for cosy evening light.

How bright is one bulb?

470 lumens from 4W. On its own that suits a bedside or side lamp; in a chandelier or candelabra, several of them together give a well spread level of light for a whole room.

How long should it last?

Keep it to dry indoor fittings. Fully sealed enclosures trap heat around the base of an LED lamp and shorten its life, so an open or vented holder is the better home for it.
